But the whole concept of Barbie is that you can do or be anything, as long as you try, and with that kind of energy, what moniker doesn’t work perfectly as a #BarbieCore baby name? Or you can get inspired by some of Barbie’s actual friends in her world, like Midge and Teresa. Like how Barbie is short for Barbara, use that theme to find names for your little one that are actually just nicknames of more formal (and sometimes stuffy) names. There is a definite vintage feel to Barbie’s world and her friends, and those vibes can help you find the sweetest little baby name. The beauty of #BarbieCore is that it’s timeless, it’s fun, it’s a little funky. Look, you don’t have to name your kid Barbie or Ken or even Skipper (although all three are on this list). Whether you were a Barbie girl growing up or not, taking a look into Barbie-inspired names or #BarbieCore baby names is a great way to find the baby name you’ve been dreaming of. Books, television, hearing it shouted at the park by another mom - there are no “wrong” ways to find a baby name you love, and sometimes looking at the most unlikeliest of places is a good start. Inspiration for naming your baby can come from literally anywhere. ![]() I don't really know of other games that do this kind of stuff-repackaging earlier levels in a game so that they continue to throw up new challenges and enhance the story, instead of being just something you go back to and replay on higher difficulties. ![]() The foggy nighttime ambience of the level-again making it feel very different to what it was like in the campaign-enhances this spooky mood, and I loved indulging in the fantasy of just how shit-scary it must've been for those Nazis finding the mutilated bodies of their comrades on the set of a film charting the life of a maniacal killer. So carrying out a massacre on the film set of a movie that frames you as a depraved serial killer makes it feel like you're living out one of those urban legends you hear about with horror movies where creepy occurrences happen during filming. There's also something delightful about the fact that throughout these missions, you're assumed dead by the Nazis, seeing as Blazko was beheaded live on national Nazi television (then resurrected by his allies in one of the most hastily delivered and weird video-game plot twists ever). One of the coolest features in the game, for example, are the optional assassination missions, which give you an excuse to revisit levels you've already completed to go and take out various Nazi Oberkommandos holed up around the United States. But that's not to say that Blazko's adventure is lacking in brains. In reality, I was compelled to play it because having recently replayed Bioshock Infinite and by and large loved it, I've been trying to fill out my FPS resume a bit to see if old Binfinite is really that bad compared to what many regard as the great shooters of modern times.Īnd having played Wolfenstein 2, I still think Binfinite is great, and admire the latter for shooting for the moon with its story and missing, while ol' Wolfy is a pretty simple tale befitting of its pretty simple hero ( its predecessor, The New Order, easily bested it on this front). Turns out that Nazi-bashing is quite a lot of fun, but you don't need me to tell you that. I'm a bit late to the party, but I've only just got round to playing and completing Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus. Alternatively, with the diplomatic approach, it can take much more time to build up an effective gang and be able to attack safehouses. ![]() The aggressive campaign is also the riskiest, because if a player's boss dies the game immediately ends. Playing aggressively means sacrificing any diplomatic bonuses, and players can also expect more requests for war. ![]() There are, of course, downsides to each playstyle and specific bosses that work better than others. Although building rackets will be necessary, the main focus will be increasing notoriety with strong, hostile moves that quickly take out the competition. Players can run businesses to gather funds for upgrading weapons, recruiting top-tier gangsters, and expanding their criminal empire. To follow this path, players will need to put most of their focus into fighting, taking over rival businesses, and winning wars. It will also allow them to quickly upgrade rackets and promote a gang member to a higher rank, such as advisor or underboss. Making aggressive moves will increase notoriety and make it easier for players to recruit tougher gangsters. Having a business-heavy playthrough of Empire of Sin will grant players the money they'll need to eventually take out the other bosses. Depending on the level of diplomacy players practice, businesses can also be traded or alcohol can be sold for more than it's worth. Angelo Genna has great bonuses for building an empire based on speakeasies, and Frank Ragen is optimal for a syndicate focused on breweries. Depending on the player's boss, some of these businesses can be quite easy to upgrade and expand. There are casinos, speakeasies, breweries, and brothels. However, there are a large number of abandoned buildings to take over that can help grow a player's empire without ticking off rival bosses. Of course, there will still be options for diplomacy or aggression, and inevitably players will need to take out other bosses. This is by far the longest path to beating Empire of Sin.įor this route, players will put all of their focus into taking over or developing fully upgraded rackets. This method will also help keep the cops at a distance because players won't be committing as much crime when they play diplomatically. Players can trade businesses, offer tribute, or perform favors for other bosses to strengthen their relationships. To remain diplomatic and avoid confrontation, build businesses in abandoned buildings instead of taking over enemy rackets. Players have the option to team up with other bosses, which can be very helpful for taking out some of the stronger rivals. Still, there are some benefits to playing nice with the other bosses. Even after an alliance is formed, rival bosses can turn on the player, and their character can end up worse off. How to Win in Empire of Sinĭiplomacy is, arguably, the hardest mechanic in the game to utilize. It will take time to build up enough resources to strike at opposing mob bosses, but there are a few different strategies players will be able to focus on. Every choice players make will bring them closer to victory (or defeat). There are a variety of ways to accomplish this, including building diplomatic relations or monopolizing the booze running game. In order to win in Empire of Sin, players will need to take out every other boss and own all crime in every available neighborhood. Related: Empire of Sin: How to Heal Your Squad (The Easy Way) Choosing the right boss will depend on the path to victory that players want to take. For example, Dean O'Banion has a very powerful combat bonus, but it will be difficult for players to start or maintain alliances while playing as him. Each boss in Empire of Sin has strengths and weaknesses to consider. Players will start by picking one of the 14 bosses based on their play style and skills. ![]() They were easy to record, as Paul Thomson is a fantastic drummer. I cleaned up all the instruments and made them very tight with the drums to give the song that mechanical feel. We used Pro Tools editing to fix mistakes. Very few musicians can play well to a click track, and natural tempo changes in a song can be great. We recorded as live as possible, without a click track to keep us in tempo. It was nice to be home but it had also been hard to find a similar studio in the UK for the same money. We recorded at Gula Studion in my home town, Malmö in Sweden, which had a great 1970s console and a big sounding room. I wanted to give listeners the loudness of a live gig. The main thing I added was an aggressive sound. I’d been much more creative when I produced the Cardigans. I think that got me the job of producing them, but I didn’t have to change much. Before working with them, I saw the band live and told them I liked the Talking Heads vibe some songs had and suggested we explore that. Otherwise, Take Me Out was great on the demo and already had the marvellous intro in a different tempo. It was a good hook but I thought it sounded like a bagpipe melody. I don’t remember hating Take Me Out! But I certainly didn’t like the famous guitar riff. Photograph: Tabatha Fireman/Redferns Tore Johansson, producer When we recorded it, Tore Johansson, the producer, hated it and kept asking: “Why are we recording this? The other songs are so much better.”įranz Ferdinand at the Mercury Music awards in 2014. When you come up with a song like that, the dreamer in you is thinking: “One day, we’ll play this in Mexico City.” But the realist thinks, “We’ll press up 500 copies and sell 35”, which is what had happened with all the other bands I’d been in. The first time we played the whole song in the rehearsal room, I joked: “This would sound really good on the radio.” But I was thinking of a session on John Peel or something – if we were lucky. We thought it would be funny to spoof the sounds you got on Queen records or the beginning of Eye of the Tiger. The short staccato bursts of sound – where you hit a cymbal and hold it to stop it resonating – came about because Bob Hardy, our bass-player, had read an article about “sports rock”, the music played at sports games in the US. The tempo of the chorus was much slower than the verse, so I suggested playing all the verses at the beginning, but slower, then the choruses. The “I know I won’t be leaving here with you” section formed a bridge between the verse and chorus, but when we rehearsed it with the band, it didn’t sound right. ![]() I went into the woods and I met my witch. It’s in the midst of that sense of disorientation – of not knowing where the story will go next – that we discover what needs to unfold and where this chapter or character is taking us. We have to step into the darkness – into the unknown – in order to connect with our creativity. As healers, priests and wild women, they drew strength, creativity and magic from what they gathered and encountered in the moss and roots and mud.įor writers too, I think, the woods have a particular symbolism. Little Red Riding Hood and her Grandmother fall prey to the cunning Wolf and are only rescued by the woodcutter (except, of course, in Roald Dahl’s wonderfully subversive version).Īnd yet, long before these stories were in circulation, women had a different relationship with the woods. The forest that springs up around Sleeping Beauty holds her fast in a passive sleep state until she is finally awoken by the handsome prince. In the traditional world of fairy tales, women have often been the innocent victims of the woods and the wild places. The woods and the wild places have formed a part of my internal landscape from an early age so it’s the most natural thing in the world that they should appear in my writing. Now I live at the foot of a different kind of wild landscape, the Yorkshire Dales. I grew up in West Yorkshire on the edge of the moors. And this is where, perhaps inevitably, the woods find their way into the story. In my second book, Miss Mary’s Book of Dreams, Ella and Fabia lead me through the next chapters of their lives. And to my great pleasure, readers seemed to respond to them too. ![]() I loved every minute of writing these women. Gradually, Fabia and Ella carve out their own journeys – independently and together – slap bang at the centre of their own stories. Fabia opens her vintage dress shop and gradually begins to transform the lives of the women in the town with her own particular form of ‘everyday magic.’ Ella struggles to discover who she is in a new place, among new people. In The Dress, Fabia and Ella Moreno are a mother and daughter who arrive in York as outsiders. Where are the elders, passing on their hard-won wisdom? Where are the matriarchs, guiding the next generations – gently and fiercely – into the future? All too often, the mothers that we encounter in fiction are wicked stepmothers or jealous and manipulative caricatures, railing against their waning beauty. It’s something that fascinates me and, it seems to me, it’s a relationship that gets overlooked in fiction relegated to sub-plot in the face of the boy-meets-girl narrative. When I set out to write my first novel, The Dress, I found myself writing about a mother-daughter relationship. (And don’t even get me started on that term ‘women’s fiction’ and what it may or may not mean.) The word ‘heroine’ doesn’t sound quite the same as hero, does it? ‘Shero’ sounds like an add-on, an afterthought. To use Joseph Campbell’s terminology, stepping into the woods involves stepping across a threshold, heeding a call, confronting an obstacle or challenge as part of our ‘hero’s journey.’īut the idea of the ‘hero’ raises a thorny issue for me. Losing ourselves in the woods – and then finding our way through the darkness – is a rite of passage, an initiation. According to Jungian psychology, the woods occupy that part of our collective unconscious associated with our greatest fears, our shadow selves, the Wolf that lurks on the path. In the fairy tales I love the most, there is a point when the central character steps into the deep, dark woods. National Emerging Writer Programme Overview. |
